The publication offers new insights into the role of foreign early medieval elites in shaping power structures in Silesia and Moravia during the tenth and eleventh centuries. Drawing on archaeological and historical sources, it demonstrates the presence of a distinct, relatively homogeneous military-mercantile group of men with close connections to northern and eastern Europe. The core of this community consisted of individuals from the Scandinavian cultural sphere – Vikings and Varangians – who, particularly in the initial phases of their activity, are likely to have operated in the service of the Greater Polish elites. The volume also includes a study on the possible involvement of Scandinavians in Bohemia, along with contributions from foreign scholars from regions where their presence has been unequivocally attested. The book further provides a historical perspective on the issue within the Czech-Moravian context, based on the surviving written sources.
