The publication by an international team of authors addresses one of the key stages in Ancient history – the period of the reign of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161–180 AD), which featured many extraordinary events that affected the whole of Europe. One of the largest pandemics in history, the so-called Antonine Plague, significantly influenced the second century AD. The testimonies of the disease diagnosed as chickenpox are presented and re-evaluated in the relevant chapters of the book. The Marcomannic Wars are another contemporary destructive episode of the studied period. The most extensive set of archaeological evidence of the war events comes from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria and is presented in the comprehensive and richly illustrated final chapter of the book.
