This collective monograph explores the culture of early medieval elites in Central Europe from a supra-regional perspective. Drawing on archaeological, historical and scientific evidence, it examines the formation of power structures, the character of centres, and the material expressions of elite environments between the eighth and eleventh centuries. The volume is organised into three thematic sections. Society addresses social and economic issues, including iron production and the status of rulers within the wider Carolingian context. Centres analyses selected power centres and their hinterlands in Central Europe, considering questions of ecclesiastical influence on the elite culture and publication of partial anthropological and environmental data. Artefacts presents representative assemblages of elite material culture and offers their cultural-historical interpretation. The volume provides a comparative perspective on early medieval society, centres and artefacts within broader European contexts.
