  • Research assistant/graduate student – geoarchaeologist/petrographer

    The Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Brno, announces on 14 November 2025, following the Act No. 283/1992 Coll. on the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, as the Act No. 420/2005 Coll., the Statutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and by its internal regulations, a public tender for the following position:

    Research assistant/graduate student (qualification grades 1 or 2 by the Career Development Rules for CAS Employees with a University Degree) as a Geoarchaeologist – Petrographer.

    Job description:

    We are looking for a colleague to join our newly formed team in the position of geoarchaeologist specializing in the petrography of rocks used in the production of chipped and polished stone artifacts. The main task will be the comprehensive petrographic analysis of stone artifacts and comparative rock samples from potential sources for the purpose of accurately determining the raw material and establishing its provenance. To a lesser extent, the work also includes occasional sampling in the field and participation in the team’s archaeological research.

    Requirements:

    Education:

    • University degree in geology with a specialization in rock petrography
    • Education in archaeology or related fields is an advantage

    Experience:

    • At least 3 years of previous experience in rock determination and provenance and a publication history on the subject is required
    • Motivation to learn new procedures and continuously develop methodologically is important

    Skills and prerequisites:

    • The candidate must be proficient in the basic methods of petrographic study (microscopic analysis of thin sections, electron microprobe, SEM, magnetic susceptibility, density measurement, etc.)
    • Active knowledge of spoken and written English
    • Independence, responsibility, and systematic approach
    • Active involvement in the team’s publishing activities
    • Team spirit and willingness to cooperate with experts from various fields and institutions
    • Advantage: Group B driver’s license

    Laboratory Specialist (grinding laboratory)

    Job description:

    We are seeking a colleague to join our newly established thin-section laboratory. The primary responsibilities will include preparing and creating grinding and thin sections from various materials such as stone, bone, ceramics, metals, soils, and sediments. The role will also involve assisting in the preparation of samples for geoarchaeological analyses (e.g., granulometry, magnetic susceptibility, and chemical analyses) and operating analytical and documentation techniques (e.g., microscopy and XRF). Additionally, the job includes supporting tasks in the post-processing of archaeological research, such as sorting and recording soil samples and archaeological finds, as well as occasional field sampling.

    Requirements:

    Education:

    • Completed secondary education
    • Education in geology, archaeology, analytical chemistry, or related fields is an advantage

    Experience:

    • Previous experience in a grinding laboratory is not a requirement
    • Motivation to learn new procedures and willingness to continuously educate oneself systematically are important
    • Time flexibility is required for occasional training or short-term internships in Czech and foreign laboratories

    Skills:

    • Manual skills such as cutting, grinding, polishing, and working with chemicals and laboratory equipment
    • Proficient in English (minimum B1/B2) – required for internships and communication with service centres
    • Independence, responsibility, and a systematic approach
    • Ability to work in a team and collaborate with experts from different fields and institutions
    • Preferred: experience with microscopes or analytical equipment, category B driver’s license

The main specialization of the position is radiocarbon dating and isotope analysis.

    Requirements:

    • Completed university education (Master’s degree, Ing.) in archaeology and/or geology and/or nuclear physics
    • Appropriate professional experience in archaeology, geosciences, nuclear physics, and related disciplines
    • Appropriate publication activity in peer-reviewed international scientific journals

    Research fellow of the research centre at the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Brno – specialisation in Slavic and medieval archaeology with the main focus on the medieval ironwork and research of medieval ironworking areas.

    Requirements:

    • Master’s degree in Archaeology and ongoing doctoral study at the Department of Archaeology and Museology, Masaryk University in Brno.
