On 23–24 April 2026, the first Transnational Expert and Networking Meeting of the ROMAN LEGACY project took place in Novi Sad, Serbia, bringing together 74 participants from ten Danube countries. Project partners, strategic partners, and external experts from the fields of archaeology, history, heritage, tourism, technology, and public administration gathered to jointly shape a new European Cultural Route focused on the Roman Danube Limes and the shared Roman heritage of the Danube region.
The meeting featured expert presentations on the Council of Europe Cultural Route, best-practice examples, branding approaches, and the further development of the LIMES Mobil App. Participants also worked in groups to explore the common Roman heritage of the Danube region and develop a shared narrative for the future Cultural Route. Discussions highlighted the Roman Danube Limes as a symbol of connectivity, exchange, and shared European history, while emphasising its relevance for cultural identity, cooperation, and sustainable regional development.
The second day included a study visit to Sremska Mitrovica (ancient Sirmium), where participants visited the Imperial Palace and Lapidarium, connecting the discussions with the region’s archaeological heritage. The meeting marked an important milestone for ROMAN LEGACY, strengthening transnational cooperation and laying the groundwork for the development of a new Cultural Route of the Council of Europe.
