On August 8, 2026, a full-day historical event titled “The Marcomannic Wars” took place at the Mušov Visitor Centre – Gateway to the Roman Empire and at the Hradisko u Mušova archaeological site. The event was held as part of the Interreg Roman Trails project, serving as a pilot activity that combined archaeology, expert interpretation, living history, and an interactive program for visitors.
The aim was to showcase the era of the Marcomannic Wars and the significance of Hradisko u Mušova as one of the most important sites associated with the Roman army’s presence north of the Danube. Visitors could explore Roman and Germanic encampments, learn about daily life, crafts, weaponry, and Roman medicine, and watch a Roman cavalry demonstration.
The program also offered hands-on activities for families with children, such as mock combat with safe swords and shields and wax seal making. The highlight of the day was a joint march with a Roman military unit from the Visitor Centre to Hradisko, followed by a narrated performance titled “Ambush at Hradisko,” depicting a clash between Roman and Germanic warriors.
The historical program was complemented by a guided tour of Hradisko led by archaeologist Marek Vlach and a lecture by Balázs Komoróczy titled “The Archaeology of the Marcomannic Wars.” This allowed visitors to combine the experience of living history with expert insights into the site and the period of the Marcomannic Wars.
The pilot activity demonstrated that combining an authentic archaeological setting, living history, and expert interpretation offers an engaging way to make Roman cultural heritage accessible to diverse groups of visitors. The proven format can also be further developed at other locations within the Roman Trails project.
